Kecskemét, 3 July 1940 – Auschwitz-Birkenau, 29-30 June 1944
Vera was sent to the Kecskemét ghetto with her six-month-old brother Miklós and her parents. On 17 June 1944, the ghetto residents were escorted to the nearby copper factory and strip-searched naked. A neighbor visited them and was shocked by the appalling conditions. We know from him that by this time both children were sick with whooping cough. Vera asked the adults why they were crying and why they had to move. They were probably deported on 27 June. On arrival at Auschwitz, the children were gassed by the SS. Vera left behind a tiny signet ring engraved with her name and age: “Vera 4”. Today it is worn by a relative’s daughter, also named Vera. Vera’s father and Miklós’ father served as labor serviceman during this time. He learned of his family’s deportation from a note written by a kind-hearted unknown stranger and sent by post. He kept the note in his wallet until his death, it read “Schwarz Lajos 105/301 Air Raid Shelter Company, 412 P.O. Box, Szeged: I couldn’t post it anymore, someone please mail it to this address…if there is a way… Poor man had his wife and 2 small children taken away “.
