Children of Saul

Veronika Singer

Nagykanizsa, 22 February 1940 – Auschwitz-Birkenau, around 24 May 1944

Veronika was the fourth, youngest child in the Singer family. On 17-18 May 1944, the family was deported from Nagykanizsa to Szombathely and from there to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Her sister, Rozália Singer, was sent to work in the Auschwitz-Birkenau storage camp (the so-called Canada). Here they sorted the clothes of the gassed victims. One day while working, Rozália found her mother Matild Polacsek’s cardigan with five-year-old Vera’s tiny socks in the pocket. That was how she found out they were no longer alive.
