Nagyberezna, 1940 – Auschwitz-Birkenau, 1 June 1944
Himmel Pinkász and his wife Eszter Berkovits lived in Nagyberezna, Subcarpathia. They had three minor children: the 16-year-old Lili, the eight-year-old Moses and the four-year-old Gerzson. On 16 April 1944, at dawn, the Hungarian gendarmerie ordered the Jews to leave their homes, giving them only six hours to pack their belongings. The victims were taken to the collection camp set up in the Moskovits brick factory in Ungvár (Uzhhorod) that same day. From there, the Jews of Nagyberezna were deported at the end of May. Most probably they arrived at Auschwitz-Birkenau on June 1, where the vast majority of them were murdered, including Gerzson Himmel, Lili and Mózes.
