Miskolc, 1942 – Auschwitz-Birkenau, 12-16 June, 1944
Dávid Herschkovits and his wife were married in 1913 in Hajdúnánás. Later they moved to Miskolc and they lived at 55 Vörösmarty Street. In the spring of 1944, the 56-year-old head of the family and his 47-year-old wife, Berta Tziment were crammed into the Miskolc ghetto with their seven children. The ghetto was evacuated on 5 June, when they were driven to the Tatar Street brickworks, from where deportation trains left for Auschwitz-Birkenau between 12 and 15 June. Most of the Miskolc Jews were killed on arrival. Among them were the Herschkovits parents and the 16-year-old Judit, 15-year-old László, 13-year-old Miklós, five-year-old Noémi and two-year-old Tamás. The older siblings, the 22-year-old Ernő and 19-year-old Béla were selected for forced labor and sent to other concentration camps. At least one of them survived.
